8/27/2023 0 Comments Capital ship simulator![]() Especially with S/M ships exiting highway way too late. all ships overshooting target and then turning back.capital ships dropping out of travel mode 50-100km before reaching target (fly to, attack all in range commands), slowboating the rest of the way.Somewhat related navigational/travel issues: 200m/s), increasing maneuverability to allow gate travel at manageable speeds without causing congestion. ![]() ![]() QoL: Change how travel drive works for capital ships: allow them to throttle the speed down to a minimum (e.g.Bigger gates, maybe with multiple designated areas for entering/exiting that AI ships get automatically assigned to (instead of not working queue forming at gates).Wasting even more time turning when you're up for gate travel is unnecessary. Align towards the gate if queues are absolutely needed.Keep the traffic flowing, avoid turning at zero speed around gates (absolutely necessary).Do not stop under any circumstances when exiting the gate (absolutely necessary). It's like driving your semi truck straight on the highway, blocking all lanes, stopping and then slowly turning to align and then start driving. The absolutely worst offense is exiting the gate with an immediate full stop which causes all the following capital ships to crash into each other resulting in a mess that can take forever to untangle (15+ capital ships crashed into each other at one point, fortunately this started with a ship that bounced of my Raptor earlier, so I was in the clear). Most of the time capital ships will thus congregate on the gates and inevitably cause unsolvable traffic issues some of which are needlessly forced into OOS simulation. The issue is that the insane maneuvers of capital ships around gates/accelerators/super-highways involve so much stopping and turning (sometimes cumulatively more than 360 degrees) and virtually no flying. In fact OOS even a Raptor can and will fly in travel mode at full speed into an accelerator but for gates even OOS ships have to enter from behind - ironically that's the only time that policy actually works flawlessly and is completely useless at the same time. And capital ships having to enter gates from behind - if it would indeed solve any issues - doesn't help accelerators that are smaller, harder to enter and only have one side. It does not matter if this happens behind the gate or in front of the gate it just happens. So collision and congestion is unavoidable, ships inside ships, ships bouncing off each other, etc. Of around 18min spent passing through a sector 16min are spent dancing around gates in slow motion the worst part is that every capital ship is doing the exact same thing at the exact same spot. 2:50min spool travel drive, cut engines after 7sec, turn around and head back, collision with other capital ship.2:10min turn, turn the other way, move slowly, stop, turn some more.0:40min spool travel drive, cut engines after 8sec.1:00min stop at gate, spool travel drive, cut engines after 10sec.1:00min 50-100km from target gate: stop, Immediately spool up travel drive.0:40min spool travel drive, stop after a few sec, align for sector traversal.1:30min turn, capital ship exiting gate collides with Raptor.2min continuous travel mode (gate-to-gate)Ä«reakdown of a typical IS sector traversal (if all goes well): 2:30min exiting gate, full stop, turning, flying in random direction, aligning.Only Xenon sector blacklist and the only Xenon sector in the area was Matrix #9. Navigational issue: IS AI chose a route that took 2 more gates and additionally 3 super-highways. I chose a Raptor to demonstrate how badly it gets. I made an experiment: I took a Raptor (Paranid all-round engines) with 3-star pilot from the equipment dock in Antigone Memorial to the equipment dock in Tharka's Ravine VIII (9 gates, 2 accelerators). While combat with S/M ships, station building and several other aspects of this game are now in a more polished and enjoyable place, navigation (route planning) and especially capital ship travel (maneuvers around gates/accelerators/super-highways) is still, quite frankly, rage-inducing (road rage in space).
